LUMIRA Stays: St Helena at Joints in Byron, Byron Bay

Byron Bay was already a much-loved holiday destination pre-2020, but the past 12 months have elevated it to the global stage, attracting big-name international visitors alongside land-locked Australians experiencing a serious case of wanderlust.

As if on cue, a host of new accommodation options has opened in the Byron area, including some small but stylish ‘aparthotels’, like Joints in Byron. Founded in 2020 by musician Jimmy Lyell of Flight Facilities and his art consultant wife Chelsea Waddell, Joints comprises four cabins that are designed to feel like a home away from home – if that home belonged to your coolest and most creative friends.

Saint Helena is a LUMIRA favourite, thanks to its laid-back but sophisticated aesthetic. The colour palette is a minimal mix of white and muted pastels, underscoring a riot of textures – polished concrete floors are topped with woven rugs; rustic timber and sleek fibreglass furniture sit side-by-side.  

Joints in Byron’s artist-in-residence program means the interior aesthetics are ever-evolving. Painter Elle-louise Burguez is currently stationed on the property – her vibrant, expressionist pieces depict sunny scenes full of wine and picnics and flowers in full bloom. Sydney ceramicist Ryan Der – one half of the Bondi-based Porch Ceramics – was an early guest of the program and held classes for other guests.

Adding to the general atmosphere of communal celebration, there are monthly dinners hosted by renowned chefs and an outdoor space and garden that encourages mingling with other guests.
