If you are longing for a Mediterranean-style island paradise but (like us) don’t have the time to travel so far afield, the secluded beaches and bays of Australia’s Rottnest Island may be just what you’re looking for. We love to sun ourselves on this car-free slice of heaven looking out over the tall, shady pine trees, peacocks and pelicans and white beaches, with glass of wine in hand.

As an “A Class” reserve, the Island’s flora and fauna is well preserved and thriving. Cycle the length of its 11km spine and catch views of the whales, dolphins, seals, ospreys and colourful robins. Swimmers, snorkelers, surfers and boaters savour its sapphire waters, while sunbathers like us can explore the many stretches of white-sand beaches. These include Little Parakeet Bay, The Basin, Parker Point and Strickland Bay, which enjoy the protection of the Limestone reefs surrounding the island, sheltering the crystal clear water close to the beaches from big waves.

There is hardly a holiday that is a holiday without a day of pampering. Karma Spa at Rottnest Lodge offers a boutique menu of traditional head-to-toe treatments exclusive to the Island, as well as several luxurious options inspired by the Group’s resorts across Asia. Try the Detox Salt, Sea & Oil Experience, while there is a “Relax and Be” menu for the boys.

One of the things that attract us most to Rottnest is the peace and serenity. If you do decide to venture out, the one and only pub located on the island, the Quokka Arms, is directly in the middle near the main jetty (the Quokka being the Island’s cute and furry marsupial mascot). Riva’s Restaurant at Rottnest Lodge features a fabulous wood fired oven with creative pizza combinations on offer, as well as seafood, pastas, and shared tapas plates. We can’t resist a visit to the famous Rottnest Bakery, known for its delicious (inherently Australian) selection of cream buns, vanilla slices, jam donuts, pies, sausage rolls and fresh bread.
