LUMIRA TRAVELS | MARRAKESH

Almira Armstrong

Beat the winter blues and travel with Lumira to Morocco, where there’s sugar and spice and a slice of paradise.

Enter the mystic lands of Marrakesh where ancient city walls embrace the lively spirit of the souks within the Medina, the architectural wonders and the majestic palaces from once upon a time. Let the sweet smell of mint tea wash away the metropolis and allow the snake charmers to reel you into the city’s vibrant soul.

We love the unique ambience of Marrakesh. It’s a city at the crossroads – where rich history meets bargain markets, where chaos meets serenity, where legend meets the gateways to the mystic mountains lying in wait in the High Atlas regions. The embodiment of a perfect paradox lends the Moroccan city the luxurious notes of a Mediterranean haven that’s spiced up with African charm.

SEE/DO:
Marrakesh is city to make memories in. A place of endless possibilities, we love to visit preserved ancient palaces and walk the dusty mountains. Not to mention the high-fashion boutique hotels and celebrity chef owned luxury restaurants!

1. DJEMAA EL-FNA
There’s nothing like feeling the spirit of Marrakesh awakening at the last light, as musicians, dancers and story tellers gather at the heart of the city. Indulge in some Makouda (traditional street food of little deep-fried potato balls, delicious dipped into spicy harissa sauce) before belly-dancing the night away.

2. JARDIN MAJORELLE
We at Lumira can’t get enough of this lush 12-acre botanical masterpiece where the mysterious wonders of nature meet the extravagance of high couture. Purchased by Yves Saint Laurent in the 1980s, the garden boasts a plethora of rare flowers arranged around an eclectic blue villa.

RELAX:
First stop in Marrakesh - a visit to the hammam (bath house), which is essential in completing the cultural experience. As charming and mystifying Marrakesh can be, it can also be dizzying! After a long day you will deserve all that Heritage Spa has to offer. Here they combine the unique Moroccan philosophy of beauty through achieving peace within both body and mind, with haute beauté. We recommend their exclusive menu using only the best cosmetic brands and organic oils,  which leave us feeling rejuvenated, relaxed and pampered.

EAT/DRINK/PLAY:
We like a little spice, and this is the place to get it. With everything from couscous to piping hot bean soup, sizzling grilled aubergines and sweet and spicy chicken tagine with caramelised pumpkin, it’s lucky there is so much walking to be done around this city!

Moroccan oranges are world-renowned, so it’s no surprise that the exotic labyrinth of alleyways within the city square is lined with vendors selling the juice of these sweet, citrus gems. We love the crisp, summery taste to accompany warm strolls through the bazaar markets.

For those of you daring souls who are looking for something to blog about, cow’s hoof, sheep’s head or snail soup may just be the dishes you need to excite your palette.
