BYRON BAY IS STILL, AT ITS HEART, a slightly off-beat, hippy town. However, in 2017, throw in the mix beautiful stores, delicious restaurants and boutique bars, while indulging in the stunning northern NSW coastline - needless to say, you had us at Wategos.
With Lumira Founder & Creative Director, Almira Armstrong, taking a few days to visit stockists and enjoy some family time in the coastal town, we thought we would share some of our favourite spots this side of the NSW/QLD border!
Make like a local and stay out of Byron proper. The Bungalow (available through Stayz), located in Suffolk Park, is just a minutes walk to a secluded beachfront. Post lazy days by the water, open a bottle of wine and indulge in the serenity of The Bungalow's lush tropical surrounds. This child friendly accomodation is the perfect indulgence for parents and kids alike - with an expansive deck overlooking a huge backyard, this is north coast relaxation at it's finest!
If you haven't heard of The Atlantic, then chances are you have been living under a rock. The Atlantic is the spot to go for romantic getaways - a spot to recluse with your lover for a spot of luxury and relaxation. The beautifully restored lifestyle hotel puts significant focus on design and style, with modern elements offset by remnants inspired by travel and adventure adorning the walls of the four cottages. Why not grab some delicious ingredients from the local markets, an incredible bottle of red, cook up lunch in your gourmet kitchen before resigning to a spot by the pool?
Elegance and opulence are just two of the words that spring to mind upon entering the surrounds of Rae's on Wategos. This boutique hotel prides themselves on exceptional service, stunning cuisine and the most luxe surrounds you can imagine - think beautifully design rooms, exclusive outdoor dining and direct room to pool access!
EAT & DRINK //
Located in the Byron Bay Hinterlands region of Newrybar, Harvest is all about local, sustainable produce whipped up into something quite special. Whether it be freshly shucked oysters, the Byron Creek Farm Chicken or Ballina Prawns, Harvest has something for every tastebud. Book a long lunch enjoy the charismatic atmosphere of your country surrounds.
As the name suggests, The Farm, is in fact, an actual farm. Within the property, there is an 80 acre working farm, the breeding of produce, The Produce Store, The Bread Social and a Three Blue Ducks restaurant (the brains behind this entire operation). The Farm is an experience in and of itself - somewhere you can easily while away a couple of hours exploring the property, dining with family and friends, while learning about this incredible Byron Bay site.
The only spot you need to know about for breakfast is FOLK (and FOLK's little sister, Woods, which is located in Bangalow). This FOLK mantra is organic, ethical, plant based. We would add delicious to the mix. Beyond the delicious culinary offering, FOLK is seriously Insta-worthy and will have you wanting to snap away at every crease and crevice of this seriously cool cafe.
For evening cocktails...
Forget pubs and beer gardens, The Roadhouse is where you need to go for creatively mixed cocktails and refreshments, often using small-batch Australian spirits. While locals head here all day, we think a post-dinner cocktail at The Roadhouse sounds like the perfect way to cap off a Byron Bay day well spent!
Fate + Fortune
En route to a wedding in Byron Bay? Fate + Fortune is a must-visit for the most beautiful stationery and gifts (and of course, Lumira candles). Located in Newrybar, Fate + Fortune is part of the Newrybar Merchants - a collective of local creative artisans and curators. Be prepared to part with some serious cash - you will be "oohing" and "aahing" from one store to the next.
Enzo & Toto
Enzo & Toto is like stepping into a curated wardrobe of beautiful basics and understated, cool-girl accessories - think fallenBrokenstreet sailor hats. Basically, it's like stepping into the wardrobe of an elegant, Byron Bay entrepreneur, who has chosen the good life. Did we mention that Lumira candles and perfume oils are also part of the equation? Happy shopping!
Spell & The Gypsy Collective
No trip to Byron Bay would be complete without a trip to everyone's favourite hippy-luxe boutique, Spell & The Gypsy Collective. Think: beautiful laces, feminine prints and floaty silhouettes. Beyond their ready-to-wear range, Spell & The Gypsy Collective also offer beautiful pyjamas, underwear sets and swimwear! Watch as your inner city-slicker quickly fades and you inner hippy-luxe starts to take over!
Never without a camera at the ready, the team behind the Pampa store/showroom are both photographers by trade, hailing from Australian and Argentina respectively. Their photographic work, along with beautiful handwoven rugs, throws and cushions, can be found for purchase in their Bangalow store.
The Island Luxe store, also found in Bangalow, will have you vying for everything from their cool threads, eclectic homewares and their selection Golden Goose Deluxe Brand sneakers. Take a step out into the Island Luxe courtyard and feel instantly at home in this Byron Bay hideaway.
Stand Up Paddle Board
There is a reason stand up paddle-boarding has become something of a trend in recent years - it's fun, energising and not too tricky to master. You're in Byron Bay and feeling uber relaxed. Now is the time to take up a new water sport. We would recommend taking a lesson with Byron Bay Stand Up Paddle, before hiring a board and taking to the river yourself!
Walk to the Byron Bay Lighthouse
There is nothing more enjoyable than seeing the sunrise in Byron Bay than with a walk up to the Cape Byron Lighthouse. Enjoy those spectacular coastal views post hiking through rainforest, beach, grassland and clifftops to the lighthouse!
