How to read fragrance notes
Most fragrances are described in three layers, often called the fragrance pyramid.
- Top notes are what you smell first. They are bright and fleeting, lasting minutes.
- Heart notes emerge as the top notes fade and form the character of the fragrance for the first few hours.
- Base notes are the deepest and longest-lasting. They are what stays on your skin, and your clothes, at the end of the day.
When reading notes online, pay most attention to the heart and base. That is how the fragrance will spend most of its time with you.

Why samples and small sizes matter
The same fragrance can smell different on two people. Skin chemistry, warmth and even the weather all play a part. That is why the most reliable test is always your own skin, over a full day.
This is where small formats earn their place. A 2ml sample gives you enough for several wears, so you can live with a fragrance before you commit. A 10ml size is made for travel and for getting to know a scent slowly, and it slips easily into a bag. How to test a fragrance at home
- Start with clean, unscented skin. Avoid scented lotion on the day you test.
- Apply one spray to the inside of your wrist. Don't rub your wrists together. It dulls the top notes.
- Smell it three times: after ten minutes, after an hour and after four hours. Each tells you something different.
- Test one fragrance a day, or at most one on each wrist. More than that and your nose tires quickly.
- Notice where it takes you. The right fragrance usually feels less like a product and more like a place you want to return to.
Questions to ask yourself
- When will I wear it most: daytime, evenings, travel, every day?
- Do I want it to stay close to my skin, or to leave a trail?
- How does it feel after four hours, not just in the first minute?
- Does it feel like me, or like someone I would like to be for a while? Both are good answers.
