Which Candle for Which Room? A Room-by-Room Candle Guide

Choose the room first, then the candle: warm and smoky for the living room, bright and botanical for the table, soft florals for the bedroom and bath, deep woods for after dark. At LUMIRA that means Cuban Tobacco for the living room, Tonic of Gin for the table, Balinese Ylang Ylang for the bedroom and bath, Noir d'Oud for late evenings and Tuscan Fig for a house with the windows open.

Every LUMIRA candle is 300g, burns for about 80 hours, and is hand-poured in Sydney in a soy-coconut wax blend. What changes is the mood, and that's what we'd choose by. Here's how to match one to the room you'll light it in.

What is the best candle for a living room?

A living room holds a lot: the sofa once work's done, a book, friends who stay longer than planned. It wants a scent with warmth and a little weight. We'd start here.

The Cuban Tobacco Candle was found in Old Havana. Cardamom, clove and tangerine spark first, then warm tobacco curls into patchouli and musk. It's rich without being heavy, made for living spaces, studies and reading nooks. Close the laptop, strike the match, and let the room change before you do.

If you'd like something softer, Tuscan Fig brings ripe fig, fresh leaves and a hint of blackcurrant over patchouli and musk. For evenings in a creative space, No.352 Leather & Cedar carries French leather, labdanum and dark amber from Surry Hills.

Which candle is best for a dinner party?

At the table, a candle shouldn't fight the food. You'll want something bright and clean that lifts the room instead of filling it.

Tonic of Gin is our gin and tonic candle, made with Grown Gin around the botanicals of their Garden Gin. Juniper, chamomile, sage and citrus sit over white flowers, orange blossom and jasmine. Light it an hour before guests arrive, then move it to a side table once the plates come out, so the scent stays in the air and away from the meal.

What candle should you burn in the bedroom or bath?

This is where you'll slow down. Choose florals with a little warmth underneath, and keep the flame where you can see it.

Balinese Ylang Ylang layers golden ylang ylang, jasmine sambac and black orchid over incense, sandalwood and patchouli. It's made for slow evenings and a warm bath. For something gentler, Persian Rose is a Damascene rose lifted by bergamot and mandarin, beautiful for slow mornings. Il Giardino, magnolia, jasmine and gardenia from a Ligurian garden path, brightens a bathroom or a quiet corner.

Which candle for a late evening?

When the day's over and the lamps go low, reach for something deep and resinous.

The Noir d'Oud Candle opens with smoke, softens into rose, then settles into sandalwood, patchouli and oud. It's for cold, rain-soaked nights and the conversations that go past midnight. Terra Australis is its quieter, Australian sibling: tea, pine and fir balsam with a drift of distant smoke, for an evening of stillness.

Which candle suits a summer house?

Windows open, salt in the air, nobody wearing shoes. A summer house wants a scent that feels sunlit.

Tuscan Fig works here too, with its warm, creamy fig on sun-warmed Tuscan hillsides. Light it on a kitchen bench in the late afternoon, when the light turns gold.

How do you get the most from a 300g candle?

  • First burn: let the whole surface melt before you put it out. Wax remembers its first burn.
  • Every burn: trim the wick before you light it, and burn for no more than four hours at a time.
  • Between burns: a Candle Lid helps keep the fragrance in the wax and doubles as a coaster.
  • Putting it out: use a snuffer rather than blowing out the flame.

Our candle care guide has every step.

What do you do with the glass afterwards?

Keep it. LUMIRA candle glass is coloured all the way through and recyclable, and it's made to be kept. When the wax is nearly gone, put the glass in the freezer for 30 minutes and the wax pops out. Rinse it with warm water, then give it a second life: brushes on the vanity, a single stem, a jar of matches beside your next candle.
