How to Wear Perfume in an Australian Summer

Soleor Eau de Parfum 50ml

An Australian summer is hard on perfume. The heat lifts it off your skin faster, the humidity can make sweet scents feel heavy by lunchtime, and a bottle left in the car turns quickly. Summer is also when the right perfume smells its best: warm skin carries scent beautifully. It just needs a lighter hand and a little planning.

Here is how we wear perfume when the temperature climbs.

Choose fresh, bright scents for the day

Heat amplifies everything. A rich amber or a dense oud that feels perfect on a winter evening can become overwhelming on a 35-degree afternoon. In summer, look for scents built on fruit, citrus and light florals over a soft musk or wood base. They feel clean in the heat and wear close to the skin rather than filling the room.

That is the feeling behind Sun Soaked. Created with perfumer Florian Gallo and inspired by Almira's travels through Mallorca, it captures the golden warmth of sun-drenched days: crisp, ripe green pear, the soft florals of honeysuckle and peony, and a base of musk and cedarwood that lingers on the skin. Fresh, fruity and radiant, it was made for day, holidays and everyday wear, and it won Best Fragrance at the Pure Beauty Global Awards 2025.

Save the deeper scents for after dark. A smoky, spiced perfume like Cuban Tobacco still has a place in summer, on a cooler evening once the sun is down.

Spray less than you think

Warm skin projects perfume further, so the two or three sprays you wear in winter can feel like too much in January. Start with one or two. You can always add more; a summer scent should be discovered up close, not announced across a room.

Put it where your skin is warm

Spray onto pulse points, where the skin is warmest and gently lifts the scent: the inside of the wrists, the inner elbows and the nape of the neck. Don't rub your wrists together afterwards. It doesn't damage the perfume, but it speeds up the bright opening notes, and in summer those are the part you want to enjoy.

Bare skin, or the right lotion

You'll often hear that moisturising first makes perfume last longer. For many people it does, because perfume holds better on hydrated skin than on dry skin. But not every lotion helps. Some leave a film that perfume sits on top of, and it fades faster.

Our advice is to try both: one day on bare skin, one day over lotion, and notice which lasts longer on you. If you like a lotion underneath, choose one that's lightweight and absorbs fully before you spray. Our Paradiso del Sole Hand & Body Lotion is light and fast-absorbing, with an uplifting citrus warmth of mandarin, bergamot and dark amber that sits happily under a fresh perfume.

Keep your bottle out of the heat

Heat and sunlight are what age a perfume fastest. Never leave a bottle in the car, on a sunny windowsill or in a beach bag in the sun. A cool, dark drawer or cupboard keeps it smelling as it should for much longer.

Carry a small size for later

Fresh, bright scents are lovely in the heat, but they're lighter by nature, so plan for a top-up. A 10ml in your bag means you can refresh before dinner without carrying the full bottle. The Sun Soaked Travel Set pairs the 10ml with a soft pebble leather case that clips onto a handbag or keyring.

Not sure yet? Start small

Summer is a good time to test a new perfume properly, because heat shows you how a scent really wears. Our 2ml samples start at $8: wear one for a week, on a hot day and a cool night, and then choose your bottle.
